The MK continuously test different models for involving authors in their production processes. How can the theatre become a place where contemporary literature is created and the texts become a means of not leaving reality alone? In doing so, MK focus on interdisciplinary, long-term collaborations and repeatedly pose the question of forms of collective work.
The prize for contemporary authors, which is jointly awarded by the City of Munich’s Department of Culture, Drei Masken Verlag and Münchner Kammerspiele, will be awarded again in 2025. The main prize, awarded by the Edith and Werner Rieder Foundation, will be endowed with 20,000 euros. This makes the Munich Prize for New Playwriting one of the most highly endowed awards for up-and-coming playwrights in the German-speaking world.
Together with our authors, we are delighted to have received invitations to the Berlin Theatertreffen and the Autorinnentheatertage as well as nominations for the Mülheim Drama Prize and the Heidelberg Stückemarkt!
30.6. – 3.7.2023
With the festival “Neue Zeit, neue Dramatik 2023” the Münchner Kammerspiele presented an international young generation of playwrights to their audience. Four authors and a collective of authors were guests in a residency that culminated in a Long Night of New Drama on July 1, 2023 and the awarding of the Munich Prize for New Drama to Matthias van den Höfel for his play “Drinnen”. We congratulate him very warmly! We would also like to congratulate the author Paula Kläy for the Audience Award for her play “Oberland”.
As part of the festival “Neue Zeit, neue Dramatik” (New Time, New Drama), we also presented texts in readings and installations by authors who have a close connection with the Münchner Kammerspiele through their previous works. At Werkaum we showed “Opera - A Future Game,” a post(operatic)-apocalyptic video game essay by Michael von zur Mühlen with music by Ole Hübner and texts by Thomas Köck. Habibi Kiosk featured the new text by Allex. (Liat) Fassberg (Förderpreis 2021) “My naked existence” could be seen and heard.
With readings, performances, an installation and the award ceremony of the “Münchner Förderpreis für Dramatik” endowed with 10,000 euros, this weekend was all about the Theater der Stadt München as a production site for contemporary literature and its publication.
