Janina Brinkmann
Janina Brinkmann, born in Hamburg, graduated with a degree in fashion design from the University of Applied Sciences in Hamburg. Since 2009, she has been working as a freelance costume designer, creating costumes for theatre, film and opera. She also designs stage sets for the Schauspielhaus Wien, the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus, NNT/NITE and the RambaZamba Theater.
She is currently designing costumes for productions by directors Anita Vulesica, Jan-Christoph Gockel and the DeadCentre directing collective at venues including the Münchner Kammerspiele, the Schauspielhaus Hamburg, the Deutsches Theater Berlin, the Burgtheater Vienna, the Schauspiel Frankfurt and the Hamburg State Opera.
For “Schubert in Paradise” (directed by Katharina Bach), Katharina Bach and Janina Brinkmann are collaborating once again. Since 2021, Janina Brinkmann has been designing costumes and masks for Katharina Bach’s roles in Jan-Christoph Gockel’s productions: “Eure Paläste sind leer”; “Der Sturm: Das Dämmern der Welt” and “Walleinstein – Ein Schlachtfest in sieben Gängen” at the Münchner Kammerspiele.
The productions of “Uncle Vanya” at the Schauspiel Stuttgart and “Die Unverheiratete” at the Burgtheater in Vienna (both directed by Robert Borgmann), for which she designed the costumes, as well as “Die Maschine oder: Peace Reigns Above All Peaks” (directed by Anita Vulesica), as well as “Walleinstein – A Feast in Seven Courses”, were invited to the Theatertreffen as part of the Berliner Festspiele in 2014, 2015, 2025 and 2026. Die Maschine oder: Über allen Gipfeln ist Ruh (directed by Anita Vulesica) was awarded the Nestroy Prize in 2025 for Best Production in the German-speaking world.
In 2022, she was nominated for the German Film Award in the Best Costume Design category for her costume design in the feature film Leander Haußmann’s Stasi comedy.
