Marei feels wretchedly miserable, and also betrayed. She is betrayed by her own grandmother, who simply died before Marei could say goodbye to her. But instead of letting her granddaughter have a guilty conscience because she hasn’t been around for years, her grandmother posthumously lures her back to her old home, the Lower Bavarian village of Hiesing. She does this by bequeathing her granddaughter the “Hahn”, the inn, the centre of Hiesing. She also decrees that Marei follow in her rather large footsteps as a cuddler. So Marei revives the cuddling: like her grandmother and great-grandmother once did, she sets up couples for people of marriageable and not-so-marriageable age, organises lucrative weddings for herself and the village at the “Hahn” and doesn’t let her own affairs get too messed up in the process.
