Entfernte Nachbar*innen Kyiv-München

With the support of the German Federal Foreign Office and its “Eastern Partnerships” project funds, the Münchner Kammerspiele has been able to initiate an artistic and civil society SISTERHOOD with Kyiv in 2021. With this project, we are turning our attention to the East, continuing a tradition of our theatre that was abruptly broken off in 1933. With the support of theatres, independent groups and civil society actors, we want to facilitate artistic processes: Exchange programes, translation commissions, opportunities for encounters, job shadowing, research trips, residencies and joint rehearsal processes. We are now bundling the results of our work so far into a translocal festival “Distant Neighbours”.

Theatre as testimony, dealing with our own present conditions lies at the core of our project. We therefore focus on documentary theatre, play developments and new drama. One focus of our work is to make untold stories visible. Which stories are suppressed? Which voices are silenced? Which stories of our distant neighbours do not reach us?

Contested memories?

Tamara Trunova (director at the Left Bank Theatre, Kyiv) and Stas Zhyrkov (artistic director of the Left Bank Theatre, Kyiv) discuss in exchange with Martín Valdés-Stauber (curator of the festival “Distant Neighbours”): How can a Sisterhood, as a form of long-term artistic collaboration, be established? What can we learn from each other’s practice? The conversation looks at the joint cooperation “Ophelia - Exit Water” and outlines possibilities for future projects.
