Barbara Mundel

Barbara Mundel, born in Hildesheim, has been working as a dramaturg and director since the 1980s. Her career has taken her to Basel, the Volksbühne Berlin, the Münchner Kammerspiele, the Ruhrtriennale, the Frankfurt Opera and the Salzburg Festival, amongst others. Following senior management roles at the Lucerne Theatre (1999 – 2004) and the Freiburg Theatre (2006 – 2017), where she shaped the concept of a ‘city theatre of the future’, she has been Artistic Director of the Münchner Kammerspiele since 2020. There, she established the first permanent inclusive ensemble at a German-speaking theatre and, amongst other things, set the thematic focus on ‘History as work on the present’. Numerous invitations to the Berliner Theatertreffen attest to the theatre’s artistic success under her artistic directorship.
