Talk on intersectional feminism as part of the "We won't shut up!" festival 2024
With Dr. Reyhan Şahin aka Lady Bitch Ray, moderated by Suzan Çakar
Feminism: a movement that has historically fought for gender equality. But what does feminism really mean? Is it just a fight for women’s rights or is it about breaking through the structures of power and oppression in all their facets?
This evening will focus on intersectional feminism, an approach that takes into account the complex intertwining of different forms of oppression and discrimination. Dr. Reyhan Şahin, also known as “Lady Bitch Ray”, is a multifaceted personality who works as a scientist, political activist, book author, performance artist, rapper, fashion designer, journalist, speaker and educational consultant. With her research and experience, she will demonstrate how classism, racism and gender discrimination are interconnected and can reinforce each other. Her multidisciplinary approach and critical analysis will provide a deeper understanding of the complex structures of power and inequality in our society.
Her book “Yalla, Feminism” stands for a feminism that opposes the one-dimensional fixation on the white Western woman and advocates self-empowerment and freedom of choice for all people. In a language in which ghetto slang and scientific analysis come outrageously close, she shows where there is room for improvement in terms of equal rights. In a language in which ghetto slang and scientific analysis come outrageously close, she shows where the major discrepancies lie when it comes to equality.
