About the film “Kokomo City”

Our opening film this year is a terrific, radical documentary about black, trans sex workers in the US.

In this year‘s opening film, Daniella Carter, Koko Da Doll, Liyah Mitchell and Dominique Silver offer insight into their lived realities. In brilliant, furious, and perceptive ways, the four black transgender sex workers paint the stories of their lives – oscillating between beauty, gossip, dreams, violence, fetish, struggle and self-determination.

The movie effortlessly fights stereotypes and provides a stage for identities that are all too often rendered invisible. Instead, “Kokomo City“ makes palpable just how clearly the protagonists understand the power structures around them. The eponymous “Kokomo City“ is a fictitious place and conjures up musician Kokomo Arnold whose song Sissy Man Blues is part of the film‘s soundtrack. The feature film debut by Grammy-nominated music producer and director D. Smith is arguably the most powerful and political documentary of the year. “Kokomo City“ won two awards at its premiere at Sundance, followed by the Panorama Audience Award at the Berlinale.
