The fat years are over. Or perhaps they never existed? One thing is clear: the great theater heroines walk across the stage slim and youthful. At most, the “others”, the “ugly”, the supporting characters are “fat”. To make the “ugly” disappear quickly, however, the standard beauties are dressed in voluminous silicone suits (fatsuits) that can easily be taken off again. Clever, but for whom? In her lecture performance, Antigone Akgün accompanies a fatsuit on its journey from the first seam to the final applause and uses it to examine colonial traditions of beauty and norms.
Antigone Akgün works as a director, actress and author. In her artistic practice, she deals with the overwriting of canonical literature and attempts to make marginalized positions audible and visible. In 2021, she was nominated for the Hans Gratzer Scholarship at Schauspielhaus Wien with her debut play “Das Erste Festmahl”, which sheds light on the experiences of non-normative women’s bodies. Her directorial debut “Der Brotladen” at Theater Bremen was invited to the Brecht Festival in Augsburg in 2023.
