Julian Monatzeder

Julian Monatzeder is a director and filmmaker. He studied theatre studies at LMU Munich and film and television directing at the Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne. In addition to television documentaries such as Deutschlands Naturwunder: Das Wattenmeer (Germany’s Natural Wonder: The Wadden Sea, ZDFinfo, 2025), he is particularly interested in historical subjects and questions of remembrance culture, as seen most recently in the two films Verdrängt (Repressed, 2024) and Namen statt Nummern (Names Instead of Numbers, 2025). In 2016, he founded the film production company Fitzroy Film. In addition to film, he also directs theatre and develops hybrid formats – often at the intersection of body, text, music and camera. Together with Dorothee Janssen, he realises projects and workshops that combine different artistic means and focus on collaborative working processes.
