Over the past decade, Tosh Basco (formerly boychild) has worked primarily as a movement-based performer, exploring forms of improvisation in dance, theatre, and performance art. Basco has carved out a place for herself in the field of performance where desire, memory, and survival are written onto the body in gestures of becoming. Basco’s photography and drawings accompany her performance practice. She is co-founder of the collaborative unit Moved by the Motion with Wu Tsang, and collaboration remains an important aspect of her work. Basco’s solo exhibitions include ‘No Sky,’ Rockbund Art Museum, Shanghai, China (2023); ‘Grief Series,’ Karma International, Zurich, Switzerland (2021); ‘Portraits, Still Lifes and Flowers,’ Carlos/Ishikawa, London, United Kingdom (2021); ‘Angels, Hand Dances and Prayers,’ Company Gallery, New York, NY (2021); ‘Hand dances. 1,000 caresses’, Carlos/Ishikawa, London, United Kingdom (2019). Basco’s works have also been presented at the Venice Biennale, the Sydney Biennale, the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, MOCA in Los Angeles and ICA London, among others.
