Kay Matter

Kay Matter, who grew up in Zurich and northern Italy, studied dramatic writing at Berlin University of the Arts. Matter is the author of the plays Alice verschwindet (Alice Disappears), Alias Anastasius (both written in collaboration with Marie Lucienne Verse), Grelle Tage (Bright Days, winner of the 2022 Hans Gratzer Prize and the 2023 Nestroy Prize), and Helena oder Stay safe and sorry (Helena or Stay Safe and Sorry). In fall 2024, Matter’s genre-bending debut novel Muskeln aus Plastik (Muscles Made of Plastic) (still under the name Selma Kay Matter) was published by Hanser Berlin. Kay Matter’s short story Doppelzweier Leichtgewicht (Double Scull Lightweight) was nominated for the 49th Ingeborg Bachmann Prize in 2025.
