Monica Hirano

She is a visual artist and independent curator. In her work, Monica uses the language of performance, installation and video. She seeks to identify feelings and understand how various emotions can cohabit the mind in a sequential or simultaneous, non-linear way. In previous works, Monica has tackled themes such as childhood memories and their relationship to the roots of self-esteem, grief and immigration. In the performance Every Strand a Stream, she explores hair beyond identity, viewing it as a conduit for transformation. Inspired by spiritual traditions, she examines hair as a vessel of energy—whether grown as a channel of power or shaved as an act of renunciation.
