Andrea Hygino

She works as a visual artist, art educator, and teacher. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts (UERJ) and a Master’s degree in Visual Languages (PPGAV-EBA-UFRJ).

Andréa Hygino focuses on the school environment, learning processes, conditioning, discipline, repetition, and finds in the disobedience of students the necessary space for contestation and creation. In her works, childhood memories—of the school created by her mother that operated at home—intertwine with her present experiences as an artist-teacher/teacher-artist and the state of public education in Brazil. She was the winner of the 3rd SeLecT Award for Art and Education (Education Shirt category) and the FOCO ARTRio 2022 Award. She has participated in artist residencies at Bag Factory Artists’ Studios in Johannesburg, South Africa, at JA.CA - Art and Technology Center (Nova Lima - MG), and at Kunstverein Bielefeld in partnership with Artists Unlimited (Germany). She is currently the educational curator of the 14th Mercosul Biennial (to be held starting in March 2025, in the city of Porto Alegre).
