The Zentrum für Politische Schönheit (Centre for Political Beauty or ZPS) follows a broadened artistic (and, following this, theatre) concept: „Art must hurt, irritate and provide resistance. As the fifth state power, art and theatre shape our opinions.“ Previous actions such as „Mauerkreuze an den EU-Außengrenzen“ (First Fall at the Berlin Wall) or „Die Toten kommen“ (The Dead are Coming) roused a great deal of media attention, and sparked ethical and political discussions. This summer, in the year of „super elections“, the Zentrum für Politische Schönheit will move its headquarters to Munich. Here, the group will reflect on the original task of the theatre, namely self-knowledge. Even the communication sector claims that the German electorate should be told that „we took enough care of the world’s well-being last year – we ‘did it’. Tell them it’s time we took care of ourselves again, and that we can do it with a clean conscience. Tell them we’re allowed to calm down again.“
„Elser“ (working title), the Munich action by the Zentrum für Politische Schönheit, honours the great men and women who built the Federal Republic, and gives them the dignity that was denied them in the shadow of the „great leader“. It lets the heroes who died for our achievements have their say, like as Georg Elser, for example, who planned Hitler’s demise in 1939 by used of explosives in Munich’s Bürgerbräukeller. But the assassination of Hitler and, with him, other key National Socialists, failed tragically: Hitler unexpectedly left the Burgerbraukeller early and escaped the detonation. The Zentrum für Politische Schönheit will therefore provide a special form of care for its memorials for its action in Munich. After all, the city offers the unique opportunity to tear down intact Nazi theatre monuments made in stone – and to look through them to new foundations of humanist fame.
