WERTHER’S QUEST FOR LOVE

BASED ON JOHANN WOLFGANG VON GOETHE

Director: Jonny-Bix Bongers

play

In his letters, young Werther writes about the fears that visit him, granting us a peek at his world of emotions and dreams. He seems to be searching for a coherent identity and yet encounters normative expectations wherever he goes. He fights back and searches for alternative narratives of masculinity. Via live-streaming portals, he shows himself as he wants to be: undefined, multifaceted. In contrast to Goethe’s epistolary novel, modern day Werther is not a penfriend; instead, he sells his innermost core to the torrents and eddies of social media.
