Kammer 1

BY YAEL RONEN AND ENSEMBLE, in English, German, Hebrew, Arabic with German/English surtitles

The invitation of Yael Ronen’s much-discussed production “The Situation” can be considered a prelude to an artistic exchange with the Maxim Gorki Theater: at the same time, Nicolas Stemann’s production of “The Merchant of Venice” will be guest performing in Berlin. The simple phrase “the situation” is used in Hebrew or Arabic to describe the political situation in the Middle East. Yael Ronen relocates the action to a German language course in Neukölln. The common ground shared by the course participants is: they have come to Berlin in recent years – from Syria, where war has been raging since 2011, and from Israel and Palestine, where the political and social climate is becoming more and more militant. No wonder that German grammar is the least of the problems in teacher Stefan’s German classes. “Political, funny, slapstick, clever and perhaps the best political cabaret”, is the description by Spiegel magazine of Yael Ronen’s production, which was invited to the Berliner Theatertreffen as her second piece.

PLAY OF THE YEAR 2016 (“Theater heute”).

A guest performance by the Maxim Gorki Theater Berlin.
