THE BEGINNING OF THE END

A CONCERT EVENING WITH PAUL HANKINSON AND DAMIAN REBGETZ

concert

Who isn’t familiar with the love song, the melody linked to the memory of an irrevocably lost moment? Pop, so they say, is fleeting. But the hook line of a pop song, that succinct, memorable and unmistakable detail, continues to work in our subconscious. It captures us as listeners and inscribes itself on our memory — forever. Together with composer Paul Hankinson, Damian Rebgetz of the Münchner Kammerspiele ensemble will perform a series of pop hits, which he knows from compilation albums with titles like “80s Heartbreakers”, “Hit Pix 88” or “Summer 89”, and which he hasn’t been able to get out of his head ever since. The duo give a new context to a historical phase of mainstream music and perform their material in the setting of a recital with works by Robert Schumann for voice and piano. Damian Rebgetz and Paul Hankinson evoke music that has coagulated into capitalism, the “post-disco-topical” melancholy of the ’80s, and breathe new life into hymns to the dictatorship of love, such as: “We never said it would last forever. But soon we will have to part. Maybe then you will realise what you lost. But it will be too late lover. It’s already too late. Because we’ve stopped making future plans. This is the beginning of the end.”
