MARIA STUART

By Friedrich Schiller

Director: Andreas Kriegenburg

play

Friedrich Schiller’s drama was written between 1799 and 1800 and is set at a time when everything is too late for Mary Stuart. It begins when the Scottish monarch has already been in British captivity for 19 years. Her adversary Queen Elisabeth I only hesitates to make the judgment final when it comes to signing Mary’s execution order. Schiller sets the duel of the two queens who are embroiled in intrigue against a background of complex tensions resulting from a fight for political power, religious conflict and a sexually charged private feud.
