CHOREOGRAPH AND DIRECTOR: MARLENE MONTEIRO FREITAS
A group standing on a platform forms a chorus that plumbs the depths of different kinds of evil. They are under the influence of haunted intuitions, toxic evidence, bacterial impressions and rotten facts. The title of the show refers to several instances of how evil can be ambiguous. On one hand, the Portuguese "mal" cannot be definitively translated: it can mean discomfort, suffering, agony, scarcity, horror or simply evil. The addition "Embriaguez Divina" marks evil as a divine intoxication which counters evil with boundless ecstasy as a way to escape. George Bataille locates evil and art in close proximity to each other. What’s more, art is always a counterforce to evil and controlling reason, while the abyss of evil is a condition for art. Perhaps this is why evil appears as powerful action in a multitude of narratives – and theatre is often its setting. Marlene Monteiro Freitas creates opulent, formally strict and poetic visual worlds. Her works "Of Ivory and Flesh – Statues also Suffer" and "Bacantes – Prelude to a Purge" have already been shown at the Kammerspiele. For "Mal – Embriaguez Divina", Freitas works for the first time with a mixed ensemble of dancers and actors.
