EINGEWEIDE

BY MARCO DONNARUMMA IN COLLABORATION WITH MARGHERITA PEVERE

Performance

The dance performance “Eingeweide”, created in 2018, is a ritual of coalescence on stage. Inhabiting a desolate, surreal environment, two people become violently entangled with an AI prosthesis, out-of-body organs, relics from computer server farms and animal remains.
The prosthesis uses AI algorithms to learn in real time how to move and perform on stage. The organs pulsate, leak and crawl along the floor. They bear traces of the microbial cultures which created them. Sounds from the performers’ muscular activity are transformed into acoustics. The activity of algorithms and amplification systems transforms the source material into a powerful, physical auditive experience.
The performers’ bodies are sometimes isolated, sometimes in contact; they unite and multiply, assertively and self-confidently, only to be displaced again. In all these states they are subjects and objects of a radical physical experiment. Alternative identities emerge from the convergence of humans, machines and microorganisms.
The artistic expression of “Eingeweide” is a far cry from transhumanist ideals and hostility to technology. It creates its own vocabulary of symbolic meaning, manifesting the relationship between people, technology and “other” creatures as a harsh, poetic and humiliating form of intimacy.
