BY MARIANA VILLEGAS, IN SPANISH WITH GERMAN SURTITLES
Born in Sinaloa in 1986, the performer, writer and director Mariana Villegas is one of the most interesting emerging protagonists in Mexico’s contemporary theatre scene. Since 2007, together with the collective Lagartijas Tiradas al Sol, she has brought numerous productions to the stage. Five years later in 2012, her first written play made its debut.
“Se rompen las olas”, her debut as a writer, is a predominantly documentary work. It deals with the destructive earthquake that reduced half of Mexico City to ruins in 1985. In a dramatic solo appearance, Mariana Villegas links the collective experience to her personal history. Her parents met in the year of the earthquake. In her monologue, she picks up on different anecdotes and wonders whether she would have been born at all, had the earthquake not taken place. Her appearance is accompanied by photos and videos.
In addition to this performance, which is already considered a classic of contemporary theatre performance in Mexico and was performed in May 2015 to great acclaim during the Heidelberg Stückemarkt, Mariana Villegas is also showing a new production with the title “Este cuerpo mio”.
