DIE ATTENTÄTERIN

play

65% of all “successful” suicide bombings are carried out by women. But in total, women are only responsible for 15% of all suicide bombings. Female suicide bombers present researchers with a puzzle: do they, like men, die in the name of their country, religion or leader? Or are there perhaps romantic reasons – the love of a mujahideen, for example – that drive women to commit “altruistic suicide”? On the other hand, perhaps they are taking a stance for themselves as women, against the societies in which they live, which are almost always organised along patriarchal lines and often only offer women a very narrow scope for personal development. The director and author Amir Reza Koohestani, who was born in 1978 in Shiraz, Iran, has for many years staged guest performances of plays in Europe that were developed with the “Mehr Theater Group” in Tehran. This is now his second production at the Kammerspiele. Following his savvy, poetically charged identity-politics production of “Der Fall Meursault – Eine Gegendarstellung”, based on the novel “The Meursault Investigation” by Kamel Daoud, he now stages the novel “The Assassin” by the Algerian writer Yasmina Khadra. When the book was published in 2005, it caused a small literary sensation by not giving in to the incomprehensibility of terrorist atrocities, but by trying to understand the terrorist psyche.
