BY DAINA ASHBEE
Daaina Ashbee, one of Montreal’s most important young choreographers, explores a dark chapter of her homeland’s recent history in “Unrelated”. More than 1,000 indigenous women and girls have disappeared in recent decades. In 2016, the Canadian government began investigations. Daina Ashbee, who herself is of Dutch and indigenous origin, knows the mechanisms of inclusion and exclusion very well. Her work combines contemporary and traditional dance. The terrible aspects of history are juxtaposed with values such inner strength, vulnerability and sensibility. In her disturbing and expressive pieces, two female dancers manifest the body’s subconscious physical forces.
