War changes life. With her text for “Погані дороги” (Bad Roads) playwright Natalka Vorozhbyt looked in 2017 at everyday life in the war zones of the Donbas in eastern Ukraine. In 2020, Lydia Nagel translated the text into German for Drei Masken Verlag. Natalka Vorozhbyt’s characters search for survival tactics in order to continue living somehow among violence, torture and abuse. In the midst of an uncertain present, no one can really comprehend what is actually going on. Relationships between people change and it is often the women who have to suffer the most.
Originally written for the Royal Court in London, Natalka Vorozhbyt filmed “Погані дороги” as “Bad Roads” in 2020. Recently, the Ukrainian Oscar committee nominated the film for selection in 2022. The first image of her text finds no place in the screenplay. This personal monologue about a research trip to the combat zone is presented by Natalka Vorozhbyt alternating bilingually Ukrainian-Germanwith with Kammerspiele actress Johanna Eiworth. An impressive testimony to the suffering in the (Ukrainian) war.
Following the reading, the film “Bad Roads” will be shown exclusively in the Werkraum in its original language with english subtitles.
In cooperation with the IIPM/Milo Rau and the NTGent.
