Re-release concert for the album released in 1995
“Within 10 seconds, a song by the group Spain accomplishes exactly what it intends to. It conjures up a meticulously arranged, slow-moving universe where the streets are made of red velvet, the fog is as thick as cigarette smoke and the snow is martini olives.” – Neil Strauss, The New York Times
Suddenly, there’s that place again – one you’d long since forgotten, even though you may never have been there. That’s the feel of *The Blue Moods of Spain*: an album in which time seems to play no part.
Released in 1995, the debut album by the Californian band Spain became a slowcore classic. Thirty years on, the band returns to these songs – closer to their original form, just as they were heard on the album back then. At the heart of it all is Josh Haden, whose deep, haunting vocals and understated bass playing define Spain’s unmistakable sound. Blending jazz, blues, indie and Americana, the tracks unfold without any sense of forced progression. They leave room for thoughts that surface somewhere between wakefulness and sleep, for solitude, memory and intimacy.
Back then, Haden was 26 and still at the beginning of his life. Today he is 57. The song ‘World of Blue’, which he used to refuse to play because of its length, has since become his favourite track on the album. Perhaps this song already tells the whole story of this music: sometimes time has to pass before you can understand what you yourself once created.
To mark the 30th anniversary of *The Blue Moods of Spain*, Spain are now returning to this special venue.
