Festival opening with a screening of ‘Bull’s Heart’ by Eva Stefani
Alongside a birthday ceremony and the champagne reception that follows, the highlight of the opening will be Eva Stefani’s film ‘Bull’s Heart’.
In her documentary, director Eva Stefani follows the creative process and international tour of the production “Transverse Orientation” by theatre director Dimitris Papaioannou.
For two years, her camera captured moments from the rehearsals, which took place at the Onassis Cultural Centre (Stegi) during the pandemic, as well as from the performances in major European cities such as Paris, London and Vilnius, right through to the tour’s final stop in San Francisco.
At the heart of the film lies the question: “Why do we do what we do?”. Art is viewed both as an act of resistance and as a means of giving meaning to human existence.
The collaboration between Eva Stefani and Dimitris Papaioannou is rooted in a long-standing acquaintance that evolved into a creative partnership in the context of this documentary.
The film is told through the relationships and tensions that arise during the creation of a work of art, capturing moments of doubt, fear and vulnerability. Yet it also reveals the trust and sense of community that characterise the rehearsal process.
What is shown transcends the boundaries of a documentary film, a theatre performance or an artist’s portrait, evolving into a deeper exploration of the nature of artistic creation.
