Was bleibt von einer Tradition, wenn sie fast verschwunden ist? Und was passiert, wenn wir anfangen, sie wieder sichtbar zu machen?

Elu from deq.ttt will be the guest on the next episode of ‘A Mokka with Sue’.

For Elu, DEQ – traditional Kurdish body markings – are more than just symbols on the skin. They tell of origin, memory and belonging. Of knowledge passed down through generations, and of stories that have become inscribed on the body.

Elu explores the history and significance of DEQ, travelling to places where this tradition is deeply rooted, and incorporating the stories of the people who bear DEQ into her artistic work.

Over a cup of mocha, Sue and Elu discuss Kurdish memory, the body as an archive, tradition, and how cultural knowledge can be preserved whilst also being retold in new ways.
