A revolutionary feast to mark the start of the season
Before the revolution begins at the Schauspielhaus, a meal is served at the Habibi Kiosk.
To this day, the phrase ‘Let them eat cake!’ is attributed to Marie Antoinette – but did she ever actually say it? It has become famous nonetheless: as a symbol of the astonishing ability of the high and mighty to thoroughly ignore the hunger of others and to spoil their appetite. We’re taking the quote at face value and serving cake to the people!
To kick off the new season, we invite you to a revolutionary feast. The artist Layla Naomi Loebel transforms the kiosk into an edible experimental setup – somewhere between a cake buffet, an art installation and a convivial state of emergency.
One wall of the kiosk becomes an archive folder: on display are materials relating to the new production of *Danton* – including historical documents from the legendary world premiere exactly 100 years ago at the Schauspielhaus. The past joins the present, revolution meets the icing on the cake, and theatre history is savoured with a cake fork.
After all, every revolution begins with a question: What needs to change? And sometimes with a second one too: Who took the last slice?
Do pop by, have a look at the archive, enjoy some cake, strike up a conversation and get in the mood for the premiere together. Liberté, Égalité, Pâtisserie.
