‘Danton’s Death’ at the Kammerspiele: spanning three political systems — What does the production of *Danton* tell us about the history of the Münchner Kammerspiele?

To mark the 100th anniversary of the Münchner Kammerspiele, this weekend we are exploring the theatre’s turbulent and tumultuous history and tracing the productions of *Danton’s Death* at the Kammerspiele across three political systems: The new Schauspielhaus venue opened in 1926 with a production of *Danton’s Death* directed by Otto Falckenberg; in 1936, Falckenberg – now under the Nazi regime – staged a new production of *Danton’s Death*. *Danton’s Death* remained a staple of the Kammerspiele’s repertoire in the post-war period and was staged once again in 1951. In 2026, “Danton” will once again be the anniversary production. Together, we ask ourselves: What themes do these respective productions explore? And to what extent does the history of the Kammerspiele’s staging and performance of “Danton” reflect the theatre’s own history? What does engaging with history look like for a historically informed present?

To get to the bottom of these questions, we will be engaging in dialogue with experts and artists.

Joint visit to the German Theatre Museum

As a repository of the ephemeral art of theatre, the German Theatre Museum preserves unique treasures spanning several centuries – from Baroque prints and stage set models to autographs and one of the world’s largest collections of theatre photographs.

Participants will gain an exclusive insight into the theatre history archive and view selected original items from the collection. This explores fascinating questions about the transmission of history: What is preserved from theatre history, what is lost – and why? What can we learn from the archive about the 1926 production of *Danton’s Death* at the Schauspielhaus of the Münchner Kammerspiele? What sources can we consult when looking back at the early years of the Münchner Kammerspiele at the Schauspielhaus, and what do they reveal to us?

Talk with Nana Petzet

Nana Petzet is the granddaughter of Wolfgang Petzet. Wolfgang Petzet, through his books (*Otto Falckenberg, Mein Leben, Mein Theater* from 1944 and *THEATER: The Munich Kammerspiele 1911–1972* from 1973), played a key role in shaping the “Falckenberg myth” and, during the Nazi era, served as its chief dramaturg and most important collaborator.
Since her father’s death in 2019, Nana Petzet has been managing the extensive family archive and is working to have her grandfather’s diaries transcribed.

In her current artistic research project, she is drawing on the recent interest in Otto Falckenberg to engage with experts in a discussion about the behavior of the Falckenberg/Petzet duo at Hitler’s favorite theater.
As part of the event, she will use visual material to provide insight into the family’s internal legend-building and share her personal experiences with her grandfather, with whom she lived in the same house from birth until his death in 1985 and with whom she had a close relationship.

Different descriptions of the 1926 production of *Danton’s Death* will serve as a starting point during the workshop to discuss how the Federal Republic of Germany has addressed the distortions in cultural life inflicted on German intellectual life (specifically theater) through conformity to the criminal and totalitarian Nazi regime.
