A City Without Jews – A Jewish Operetta
Commissioned by JCOM (2027)
JEWISH
Hugo Bettauer wrote his satire *The City Without Jews* in 1922 as a ‘novel of the day after tomorrow’. With wit, pace and sharp humour, he recounts what happens when anti-Semitic slogans become reality. Vienna loses its lustre, the economy falters, and cultural life falls silent. An entertaining yet disturbingly topical story that shows just how much a society stands to lose when it excludes diversity.
TODAY
Daniel Grossmann has been engaged with this satire for many years. Together with the dramaturg Martin Valdés-Stauber and the composer Evgeni Orkin, he has now created a ‘Jewish operetta’ that links the novel with the present day. What was once intended as a warning confronts us today with renewed urgency – and brings home the astonishing relevance of Bettauer’s work.
FOR EVERYONE
An evening full of rousing music, incisive scenes and dark humour. ‘The Town Without Jews’ tells of exclusion, loss and social change – moving, entertaining and surprisingly relevant today. An extraordinary theatrical experience that touches the heart, stirs the soul and lingers long after the curtain falls.
