Musical encounters on Maximilianstraße
Half inside, half outside on the bench in front of the Habibi Kiosk, Murat Küçükarslan from İzmir and Alexandra Karamoutsiou meet up with Themis Papaminas from Thessaloniki to explore their shared love of music.
Greek-Turkish musical encounters are a breath of fresh air – all the more so when they take place in Munich, the so-called ‘world capital of Greek-Turkish friendship’. With an open-ended programme, three exceptional musicians from Izmir and Thessaloniki are performing together today. And us? Let’s enjoy the encounter, the carefree spirit of improvisation, the musical bridges being built, and the sheer virtuosity!
AMAN AMAN is a transnational cultural project that traces shared stories of migration, exile, work, solidarity and cultural creation. The project launches on 3 June 2026, and various events will take place in the following months:
AMAN AMAN moves between Athens, Berlin, Izmir, Thessaloniki, Munich, Istanbul and beyond. Instead of a linear historical narrative, the project adopts a polycentric, long-term and relational approach: stories, sounds and images circulate, overlap and are reactivated across places and formats. From the haunting voice of Roza Eskenazi, through diasporic friendships and alliances between Greek and Turkish workers in Kreuzberg in Giorgos Karypid’s film, to the post-Ottoman laments at ‘Cafe Amans’ in New York, the project facilitates cultural imaginaries that challenge ethnocentric narratives between Greece, Turkey and Germany.
