A brutal close-up
By Annie Ernaux
I want the words to be just as harsh as life
In “The Event”, the French writer recounts with brutal honesty her experience of an illegal abortion as a young literature student: “I could only write about it after a great deal of time had passed. More than thirty years. I wanted to recapture that moment, the moment of the abortion, which had been cruel. The secrecy. I wanted to transport myself back into the atmosphere of that time. The worst thing about the abortion was the environment I found myself in. The time I was living in. That is what interests me: what the environment and the time in which one lives do to a person.” Told from a temporal distance, the result is a powerful close-up that eloquently depicts the experience of powerlessness. And thus overcomes the silence and the shame. Annie Ernaux, awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2022, writes autobiographically. She recounts her life in such a way that her experiences resonate with everyone. In a language that becomes an event in itself. The author Necati Öziri (“Vatermal”) makes his directorial debut at the Kammerspiele’s Werkraum.
