When people talk about the history of German pop music, they rarely mention music production in the GDR. Yet it produced so many special things: relentlessly groovy tracks, pure DJ gold, and lyrics that are so unique and address topics that were hardly touched upon in “Western pop.” Our self-empowered vinyl archaeologist Sebastian Reier has accumulated a small collection of funk & soul, jazz, and rock. But then there’s our wonderful guest: Victoria Fischer doesn’t have far to come—she simply comes down from the Kammerspiele’s artistic office to the sofa in the kiosk. There, an informal and increasingly personal living room conversation ensues about her childhood in a family of solo entertainers in the GDR, about her father’s record collection, which she was allowed to borrow for this evening. We take our time and talk about life with music, about artists, linguistic codes, about utopia and resistance. And above all, we listen to rarely heard records.
