Even if we still have to buy the records in the end, every release from this fine Munich-based label for genre-defying jazz is a gift. The music oscillates between opening up new worlds and formal beauty. And because each release is wrapped in small masterpieces of design, it makes us forget about streaming, shuffling, and playing playlists for entire album lengths. And good albums make you want to go to good concerts, as everyone knows. There are two of those today:

The British Guardian has already recognized that Enji Erkhembayars’ music derives its beauty from its wide-ranging approach. And that approach has been shaped both by her biography and her curiosity. The singer of Mongolian origin lives in Munich and combines subtle vocal jazz with folk and poetry. And Urtiin duu, a traditional music from the vast landscapes of Central Asia. Enji’s voice makes time stand still. She remains graceful and warm, self-confident and reserved. Within a few years, this exceptional talent — and the fact that she is so unique — has made her a regular guest on jazz stages worldwide.

The evening kicks off with a new act at Squama: the duo types. Their music sounds like a dialogue between two solar systems. Martin Brugger, who describes himself as “on bass and keys and stuff,” stoically explores Konrad Wehrmeister’s dub-shrouded soundscapes. With the utmost patience, the two musicians tell each other stories about each other. And they maintain symmetry at all times. The result is a profound sound that allows the noise of everyday life to fade away.
