A music talk show delves into the lost world of Persian pop music before the revolution
Persian pop from the 1960s and 1970s: why do we still care about it today? The last form of pop music to come out of Iran connects the globally dispersed Iranian and exiled Iranian communities in nostalgia—but also in hope for freedom and equality. Self-empowered vinyl archaeologist Sebastian Reier takes you on a journey through a pop culture phenomenon that was entirely female-dominated: Iran’s pre-revolutionary pop music combined the poetic roots of Persian poetry with irregular 6/8 rhythms and the global sounds of rock and pop. Suppressed by repression or forced into exile, this music lives on – as a memory between generations, as both resistance and hope. The kiosk becomes an informal living room talk with rarely heard records from Sebastian Reier’s notorious collection – and anecdotes from sofa to sofa. We welcome some great guests: From Heidelberg comes Niloufar Taghizadeh, director of the highly acclaimed documentary about the extraordinary life story of the most famous of all Iranian pop divas: “Googoosh — Made Of Fire.” Munich DJ Darismus will also be joining us. On the one hand, he grew up with this music, and on the other, he actively shares it in his extensive DJ sets.
