On TikTok, she became known as “kurdischekween” for raising awareness of queer Muslim identities.
In a kiosk talk with Suzan Cakar, she demonstrates that topics such as gender, faith, and culture do not necessarily have to be contradictory.
Berfin Celebi is a queer, trans activist and social worker who, under her online name “kurdischekween,” shares diverse insights on topics such as trans identity, Islam, anti-racism, and Kurdish culture on platforms such as TikTok and Instagram. She is passionately committed to supporting those affected and breaking down social barriers. Berfin speaks openly about the challenges of her transition, which was marked by an involuntary outing—an experience that has profoundly influenced her life and activism. Her work focuses on communicating intersectional perspectives: she addresses multiple discrimination, self-empowerment, and the complex tension between religion and queerness. In doing so, she emphasizes the importance of representation in the digital space and uses social media not only as a stage, but above all as an educational platform where social issues are discussed and taboos are broken. Berfin speaks openly about self-discovery, spirituality, and the social challenges she encounters. With her expressive presence, she creates a space in which queer Muslim identities become visible—and shows that issues such as gender, faith, and culture do not have to be in conflict with one another.
In the series of conversations entitled “Over a mocha with Sue,” Berfin talks about her journey as a trans woman within a marginalized community, the balancing act between visibility and vulnerability, and her vision of a society that leaves room for contradictions and enables healing.
