‘The past does not pass away’ — Layers of the past in film and on stage. HFF students have delved into the HFF archives in search of German post-war films.

‘The past does not pass away.’ This sentiment pervades Lena Gorelik’s narrative in the play ‘Zeit ohne Gefühle’ (Time Without Feelings), which premiered at the Munich Kammerspiele in October 2025. A look at Feldafing. An idyllic place that, on closer inspection, becomes a magnifying glass for German history. Between 1934 and 1945, the town was dominated by the ‘Reichsschule,’ a training centre for the Nazi elite. After the end of the Second World War, the abandoned school grounds were turned overnight into a camp for ‘displaced persons,’ a reception camp for Jews who had survived the concentration camps. Today, a German Armed Forces barracks stands on this very spot.
For the sixth edition of our Blickpunkte series on 13 December 2025 at Habibi Kiosk, we delved into the archives of the HFF Munich. We will be showing a film that also searches for layers of the past: ‘Wolfsgrub’ by HFF alumnus Nicolas Humbert from 1986. In it, the director follows his mother Eva, who was born and raised in Nazi Germany as the daughter of Jewish playwright Max Mohr. ‘Wolfsgrub’ is the meeting of two people, a narrative that delves into the past and yet contains all of the present and future. The film approaches the town of Wolfsgrub in the Munich area and the history of its inhabitants like a still life.

The evening will be accompanied by a short staged reading by actor Luis Brunner from Zeit ohne Gefühle (Time Without Feelings), which broadens our view of memory and the present from the perspective of theatre production.
Afterwards, we invite you to join us for an open discussion with film director Nicolas Humbert and actor Luis Brunner. Together with the audience, we will talk about the questions raised by the film and the play and what they mean for us today.
