The highly talented Munich-based drum trio presents its new album
Munich is a city of highly talented drummers. Nowhere else is drumming, stirring, and scraping performed with such finesse as here. It’s always about coaxing the melody out of the percussion, usually in the subtext of the music—with patience, a feel for sound, and ingenuity. No one currently does this as well as Munich resident Simon Popp. As a teenager, he traded the delicate asparagus of Schrobenhausen for the much harder drumsticks. In 2009, he moved to Munich, where he has steadily gained international recognition: with his band Fazer, as a solo artist, and as a sought-after session musician. In a trio with exceptional drummers Sebastian Wolfgruber and Flurin Mück, Popp, who is nominated for this year’s German Jazz Award, is releasing a brilliant album these days. And it is also one of the few of its kind: “Trio” relies solely on the sound of drums and percussion. The three drummers sound electrifying and exciting at every moment. And their complex rhythmic interweaving opens up space for storytelling. We are delighted to celebrate this wonderful anomaly in recent music history with a release concert.
Trio by Simon Popp will be released on October 17 by Squama Records.
