The multi-award-winning Yazidi author talks to Suzan Çakar about her commitment to ensuring that the atrocities committed by ISIS are not forgotten.
Jihan Alomar, now 21, was abducted as a child on August 3, 2014, along with her mother and siblings by IS terrorists and held captive for ten months under the worst conditions. In 2015, part of the Alomar family, including Jihan, was freed and traveled to Germany as part of the Baden-Württemberg special contingent for Yazidi women from Iraq. Jihan Alomar has since been living with her mother and siblings in Tübingen, where she attends school. Together with Marvin Jiyan and Zine Balletshofer, Jihan has written the book Dankbarkeit: Die schlimmste Zeit meines Lebens (Gratitude: The Worst Time of My Life, 2nd edition 2021), which she uses to give readings at schools and other educational institutions. Jihan Alomar has received several awards for her tireless efforts to ensure that the atrocities committed by ISIS are not forgotten, including the HÁWAR.help HUMAN RIGHTS AWARD and the GermanDream Award. She is a much sought-after author for interviews, readings, and talk shows, has spoken several times in committees of the German Bundestag, and is now one of the most important voices in the global fight for human rights and justice.
Suzan “Sue” Çakar’s new talk format at Habibi Kiosk sees itself as part of a post-migrant cultural landscape: artistic, low-threshold, and permeable. “Auf einen Mokka mit Sue” (Over a mocha with Sue) combines culture with attitude — as a conversation, as a performative moment, and as an invitation to think further together.
