Marko Martin und Francesca Melandri: Alte Verstrickungen
How the silence of post-war society shapes perceptions of Ukraine
Reading followed by discussion
Russia’s expanded war of aggression against Ukraine since February 2022 has opened up new literary and social perspectives on the country’s closely interwoven history with Europe. In her book “Cold Feet,” author Francesca Melandri realizes that her father, a soldier in the Italian army, was not “in Russia” but in Ukraine on behalf of dictator Mussolini. Author Marko Martin also caused a stir at Bellevue Palace on the 35th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall when he impressively criticized Germany’s political entanglements with the Russian regime.
In his new book “Freiheitsaufgaben”, he vehemently advocates for a concept of freedom that means responsibility.
Together, they discuss with Erica Zingher how convenient narratives and evasive attitudes shape our view of the present.
