Jüdisches Leben im Nachkriegs-Bogenhausen

After 1945, Jewish life returned to the Munich district of Bogenhausen. The National Socialists had systematically disenfranchised and persecuted the district’s large Jewish population. The US military government confiscated numerous villas that had been expropriated by the National Socialists and assigned them to international aid organizations. These became contact points for Jewish survivors from all over Europe. Many of them were only temporarily in the US occupation zone of Germany, waiting to continue their journey to Israel/Palestine or the Americas.
Nevertheless, between 1945 and the mid-1950s, a market, a synagogue, and other places of Jewish self-organization emerged. These included Philipp Auerbach’s office. Historian Lilly Maier leads tours tracing Jewish life in post-war Bogenhausen, which today often exists only in stories.
