Orchestral concert by the Jewish Chamber Orchestra Munich with special guests
In 1492, many Jewish families took the keys to their homes with them when they fled Spain. As a symbol of their home and as an expression of hope that they would one day be able to return. To this day, some families still have such keys.
In addition to their Ladino language, music became crucial for the Sephardic Jews abroad in order to preserve their common identity. Centuries after the expulsion, Jewish people came to the embassy of the Spanish Republic in Berlin in 1933 to ask for asylum in Jewish Spanish. They understood each other linguistically - and yet no saving asylum was granted.
Together with the Sephardic musician family Esim from Istanbul and the Sephardic actress Alexandra Chatzopoulou-Saia, herself a descendant of Shoah survivors from Thessaloniki, the Jewish Chamber Orchestra Munich explores how Sephardic Jewry has been able to preserve its traditions over the centuries. And how this heritage was almost wiped out within a few months during the Shoah.
