In 1986, the painter and sculptor Martin Kippenberger published a little-known book, “241 Picture Titles for Artists to Borrow”. The Frankfurter Hauptschule artists’ collective has now invented its own collection of titles for works of art that do not exist and has arranged them into a play with the catchy title “2×241 Titles Twice as Good as Martin Kippenberger”. High and pop cultural references overlap, merge, overwhelm and enter into a dialogue with sarcastic invocations of the Nazi era and pure slapstick.
The twenty-person collective, which has previously made a name for itself with activist performances, was awarded the Heidelberger Stückemarkt festival’s Playwrights’ Prize in 2024 for its first theatre play. The Frankfurt Hauptschule is now making its directorial debut in the Münchner Kammerspiele’s Werk*raum during the 2025/26 season by staging its own text.
