Four directors present the texts of the four finalists in one evening: “IRIDIUM on earth”, “Spiel mit dem Feuer”, “Emina” and “Die Erstbesteigung des Olympus Mons” use very different dramatic approaches to deal with pressing contemporary issues. The jury, including Wiebke Puls, and the audience will then each award a prize.
The winners of the International Edith and Werner Rieder Prize for New Drama include Liat Fassberg, Raphaela Bardutzky and Matthias van den Höfel.

Romy can't sleep. Nightmares keep her awake. Lying next to her in bed is her new boyfriend Florian, an up-and-coming Austrian politician. At the same time, the young real estate agent Jelena is selling houses in Croatia that she could never afford herself and dreams of emigrating. Both women are connected by a past that has long been hushed up, which ultimately leads to a fateful encounter.

“Emina” deals with questions of identity and belonging in a Europe that is moving to the right. How does the past influence our present? What meaning do we ascribe to our origins?

On the evening of the summer solstice in Leipheimer Moos: Josef, an aspiring German doctor with a penchant for jaws and eyes, and Helene, a successful German singer, are invited to the revival of an old custom: the St. John's bonfire - or solstice bonfire, as Josef says. Both had imagined the evening to be more festive and, above all, different from the other, so all sorts of things go wrong. Even a resident flock of chickens with a rebellious German Reichshuhn can't create a cuddly atmosphere. And when Fuzzi Jean drops by to baptize his lost grebes, the dicey situation explodes.

“Playing with Fire” uses quirky situations to negotiate who actually decides today which traces of history are visible in traditions and how community is shaped. Also, who is invited to make bread on a stick.

An intern, a general, the president and a Swedish star architect who has become a child want to love life again: An adventure is needed. On Earth, there is only everyday monotony, endless medical diagnoses, bureaucratic hurdles and things that cannot be changed. So it makes sense for them to try to climb Olympus Mons together, a shield volcano 26 km high and on Mars. It's cold and really dark up there. Watch out! The play is not a scientific contribution to the physical principles of a Mars mission. It's an allegory - at the very end, everyone can go tobogganing.

“The First Ascent of Olympus Mons” is the decision to embrace that which cannot be overcome: the dark times, people, figures, oneself.
