(Not) a Chekhov Play
The annual production of the Otto Falckenberg School
Wild montage, familiar characters, a brand new show!
“If you place a pistol in the first act, then a shot must be fired in the third act,” Anton Chekhov once advised a fellow writer. Indeed, in Chekhov’s plays, one of the characters often kills himself or tries to shoot someone else—always the male characters. And although Anton Chekhov’s texts are populated by many different characters with individual depth, the women usually stand in the shadow of men named Ivanov, Trigorin, or Vanya. In the Otto Falckenberg School’s year-end production, they are given more attention: Nina, Anna, Masha, Sonya – their individual desires, fears, and limitations create a new tension on stage.
Siblings Masha Chekhova and Anton Chekhov take the audience on a journey through Chekhov’s work. Illuminating human life down to the most mundane details, Anton Chekhov examines the individual with their dreams and weaknesses, the failures in their own biography.
Shortly before graduating from drama school, the students of the 3rd acting class at the Otto Falckenberg School relate to the characters: What does it mean to be too weak to live the life you dream of? What about dependencies, how do you manage to break free? Will I have lived the right life?
Lizzy Timmers is a performer and director and was artistic co-director at Theaterhaus Jena until 2024. Through her working methods, she manages to bring out the individual interests and abilities of the performers and combine them into a humorous and infectious scenic journey.
