Little puppet made from pinewood, wake up!

In 1881, the novelist Carlo Collodi invented the now world-famous character and named him Pinocchio, or ‘Pine Eye’. This wooden puppet has learned a lot from the ‘fellow trees’ he used to be with: he is generous, curious and devoid of fear. The boy made of wood forsakes his home for a grand adventure which he hopes will end in him becoming a ‘real boy’. Along the way, he encounters a whole host of fantastic characters – some more and some less trustworthy. What trials and tribulations must Pinocchio endure on the road, what does he lose on his solitary journey and how do his connections to his wondrous surroundings shape him? Working with the writer Sophia Al Maria, the Moved by the Motion group centred around Wu Tsang, Tosh Basco, Josh Johnson and Asma Maroof explore the poetic and philosophical aspects of the novel and condense them into a fantastical world of movement, poetry, virtual reality and music in which children and adults alike can immerse themselves.

“Pinocchio” is the play that is introducing the group to Munich audiences. The production originated at the Schauspielhaus Zürich and is being restaged with the Kammerspiele ensemble.

Press reviews

“Although the production shown here is recommended for eight-year-olds, this 70-minute theatrical journey into a world of fantasy and poetry is well worth seeing for adults as well.”

Donaukurier • 19.1.26

“At the Kammerspiele, these beloved fairy tales—stripped of Disney tropes and tall tales—are enriched with wit and sensitivity. The result is diverse without being preachy, colorful without being ideological. Rather, all of this makes this acclaimed production multifaceted, dreamlike, and yet thoroughly contemporary.”

“’Pinocchio’ comes to life – and this is down not only to the cast, but to every department in the theatre: the set, the lighting, the music, the costumes, the animation, the video art, and so on. Please do see for yourself. And let yourself be enchanted.”

Münchner Merkur • 19.1.26

“For the story of the wooden doll that comes to life and grows a long nose whenever she lies, ‘Moved by the Motion’ has chosen two animals as narrators. A blackbird, played by the remarkably talented whistler Konstantin Schumann, and an enchanting snail, played by Nadège Meta Kanku, open the performance. Their imaginative costumes by Kyle Luu are delightful.”
