With brilliant guests from North India, Munich's most international band ignites musical and human beauty
Magical moments arise when the group Embryo meets the two sound artists Deobrat Mishra (sitar) and Prashant Mishra (tabla). Both come from one of the great musical dynasties of the north Indian city of Benares/Varanasi. They stand for classical Indian music of the highest perfection. At the same time, they have retained a progressive spirit. Together with Embryo, they mix traditional music with rhythmic structures of European origin. This is possible because Embryo is by far the most international of all the Munich bands. In 1969, founder Christian Burchard created a musical system that defies conventional categorization. Embryo were neither Krautrock nor jazz, and certainly not pop - their music has roots all over the world. Embryo occupy a space of curiosity and learning away from the dominant culture. When Christian Burchard died in 2018, his daughter Marja Burchard took over the band’s fortunes. The composer and multi-instrumentalist can build on decades of musical alliances all over the world. Many of these have lasted for generations and one of them can be admired today - in an evening that ignites both musical and human beauty.
