When things are going well, a new day brings hope and community. And when we look at this evening’s program, it looks pretty good: Whatever we call it, Nouruz نوروز, Naurūz, نهورۆز Newroz, Nevruz, نورۇز Noruz or “New Day” in German: this is the name of the New Year and spring festival, which is celebrated by Afghans, Kurds, Iranians, Uyghurs and some Turks for weeks in gatherings. Anyone who wants to join in the celebrations can do so. Our special edition at Werk*raum is presented by Disco Tehran, a global multicultural party series from New York City. Away from the dancefloor, Disco Tehran also do community work and are committed to healing within and between marginalized communities. Music unites people, that’s its nature: And quickly a dancefloor becomes a place of negotiation. That’s why Disco Tehran’s DJ Mirza is joined by a special guest: DJ TAīīZ, the first Afghan woman to run a record label, comes from Hamburg. Integrating Afghan music into the global music scene, highlighting its beauty and diversity – this is what her DJ sets achieve. She has a much broader musical base. Disco Tehran and TAīīZ: when these two greats of nightlife meet, a utopia becomes reality. Cultural supremacy is overcome, as is the racism that Afghans are far too often subjected to by Iranians. At least for one night.

And whether we are affected by it ourselves or not, as humans we hold many hands. Especially when a new day is approaching. The evening will be opened by a sensational band from Augsburg: the four musicians from Aylin’s Soulgarden combine Alevi sounds from Anatolia with pop and jazz. Profound lyrics by traditional Alevi poets such as Muhyiddin Abdal and Pir Sultan Abdal sound in a mix of indie psychedelic pop with a pinch of soul. And not only in Turkish, but also in the Kurdish language, which is suppressed in many places. The voice of singer Aylin Yıdırım feels like a fifth dimension and gets right under your skin.
