In “Lulu’s Baby”, Sahar Rahimi and Lucy Wilke deal with the topics of the desire to have children, pregnancy, birth and motherhood. Inspired and repelled by their own experiences, Rahimi/Wilke are interested in post-humanist utopias surrounding the creation of artificial humans, outside the human body, outside the female* uterus - a topic as old as humanity itself.

Since animal experiments with sheep have already been partially successful in imitating wombs, an old mythological topic is moving closer to our reality. What consequences do these developments have for ethics and gender roles? Wouldn’t pregnancy and birth outside a human body be a technological achievement that could finally free the female* body from the burden of reproduction and thus be a key to greater gender equality? And would this finally give people who have been denied parenthood the opportunity to start a family? Or would artificial wombs deprive women* of the last bastion that has not yet been hijacked by a patriarchal-capitalist logic of values - the ability to give birth…

Borrowing from horror films and operating theaters, Lulu’s Baby is an ironic, utopian vision of the future that uses disturbing and beguiling images to make us playfully reflect on the possibilities of community beyond gender constraints and mother roles.

The play is an interim stage on the way to the play “Lulu’s Machine”, which is planned for 2026. Lucy Wilke and Sahar Rahimi have worked together for many years and share an interest in offbeat female characters, the themes of disability and power and body horror films. “Lulu’s Baby” is their fourth joint production.

Produced by studiohimi in co-production with the Münchner Kammerspiele
