A Therese Giehse gala in the theater space of the same name on feminist day of struggle
It started in Munich, it ended in Munich. Therese Giehse’s life was marked by a love-hate relationship with this city, where she began her theatrical career, but also had to face many resentments and hostilities and ultimately had to flee the denunciation of this city at the last moment. Therese Giehse has written herself into the history of the Kammerspiele like no other woman, and yet to this day she is not given the place she deserves in the history of the theater and in the reception of this theater.
“My artistic confession is the fight against the mendacity of theatrical expression. I hate false tears, mawkishness and sentimentality!”
To mark the 50th anniversary of her death on 3 March, we are putting together a program in honour of this exceptional actress who, night after night, after performing the classical repertoire at the Kammerspiele, rushed to the next performance near the Hofbräuhaus to make fun of Hitler. In her work with the “Pfeffermühle”, together with Erika and Klaus Mann, she was incessantly politically active and campaigned for an open society. With her resistance against National Socialism, she risked her life, campaigned against the war and embodied a role model of self-determination for the women of her time. We are paying tribute to this impressive and strong-willed person in a three-day ceremony.
With the biographic comic “Therese Giehse. A life in the theater 1898-1975” by the renowned illustrator Barbara Yelin, we would like to pay tribute to Therese’s work in Munich. Barbara Yelin’s reading from the graphic novel she created for the anniversary will be complemented by theater texts and songs that Giehse herself brought to the stage. Companions will have their say and share memories, and our ensemble will also pay homage to Therese Giehse.
